The Newport Cycle Hub has been featured on both the Beeb & ITV.
We're delighted that our partners at the Gap Wales have got national recognition for their groundbreaking facility. While the facility was featured in a report highlighting that more work needs to be done to increase overall active travel across Wales, the Newport Cycle Hub was highlighted as a leading light - showing that, when the right infrastructure is installed, active travel levels do increase.
The system we use to manage the facility, Spokesafe_OS, is able to demonstrate this behavior change in action:
- Since opening at the end of 2022, our operating system Spokesafe_OS has recorded 14,000 accesses at the facility - that's 14,000 cycle journeys in & out of Newport city centre.
- 76% of respondents to our survey reported cycling into town more frequently since the facility opened. 51% said they would have used a car to get to Newport city centre without the facility.
- And the facility is continuing to grow steadily. Month 1 back in in 2022 saw less than 50 accesses, while July recorded over 1300 accesses.
There's still plenty of work to do, but the Newport Cycle Hub is evidence that providing cyclists with the core infrastructure they need, really does lead to more journeys by bike, more often.
