We’re delighted to announce our latest feature, the humble Check Out button!

While the rest of you have been sneaking away to the beach all summer, those who have remained in Blighty will have noticed a new feature release on their Spokesafe app the last few months.. the ability to Check Out of your booking.

This simple yet powerful addition is designed to make your bike parking experience smoother, more efficient, and more community-friendly. Here’s why we’re so excited about it:

Make Your Space Available for Others

With the "Check Out" feature, you can now flag your parking space as empty as soon as you’ve finished your Daily or Weekly booking. This means that as soon as you’re done with your ride, others can quickly book the same rack and securely park their bikes. It’s a small action that makes a big difference.

Once you’ve grabbed your access code, all you have to do is press “Check Out” and your space and locker will be available for fellow cyclists to book.

More of Us Cycling, More Often

We believe that the key to achieving a modal shift isn’t necessarily about just building thousands of new bike parking spaces. Instead, it’s about using those spaces as efficiently as possible. We’ve already converted facilities that previously only offered annual memberships into dynamic membership use, offering short-term bookings to increase usage. The “Check Out” feature is the natural evolution of this path. By freeing up your spot when you’re done, you’re helping more of us cycle in without needing to install any extra bike racks.

Checking Out to Pedal Up

And why is this important to the wider world of cycling? We know that cycle parking provides rich data which we can use to campaign for more active travel infrastructure - using Spokesafe_OS we can see exactly how many users cycle into our partners facilities. The Check Out feature will help us bolster this usage figure, and we will use this when speaking to local councils and other partners to demonstrate the impact a well used facility can have.

Heck, this feature means that our next cycle parking network will hit 60,000 accesses even quicker than our first.

In a more practical sense, features like Check Out also result in our partners not having to squeeze in racks in uncomfortable ways to increase the number of bikes parked at their facilities. Instead, we can make sure racks are spaced out properly and more cycle journeys are achieved by letting users flag when their space is free.

We can wait to see even more of you not only pedalling in more often, but Checking Out too!
